Background of the Study
Since Nigeria’s independence, Nigerian Pidgin has evolved from a creole-based lingua franca into a dynamic, flexible means of communication. Language change trends in Nigerian Pidgin reflect both sociopolitical developments and cultural shifts. Post-independence, increased media exposure, urbanization, and globalization have accelerated lexical borrowing, syntactic simplification, and the incorporation of slang (Chinwe, 2023). These changes have transformed Nigerian Pidgin from a trade language into a vibrant, culturally expressive medium that permeates popular culture, music, and everyday interactions. This evolution is marked by both standardization efforts and organic changes driven by community usage. The study examines these trends through analyses of written texts, broadcast media, and social media communications to assess how Nigerian Pidgin has adapted over time and what these changes imply for national identity and linguistic unity (Ifeoma, 2024; Balogun, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite its widespread use, there is limited systematic research on the language change trends in Nigerian Pidgin since independence. Rapid shifts in vocabulary, syntax, and style have led to debates over the standardization and legitimacy of Pidgin as a language. Educators and policymakers face challenges in reconciling these organic changes with efforts to formalize and preserve the language (Chinwe, 2023). This study aims to document these trends and provide insights into how Nigerian Pidgin continues to evolve in response to social and cultural influences (Ifeoma, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To document key language change trends in Nigerian Pidgin.
To analyze sociocultural factors driving these changes.
To propose recommendations for standardization and preservation.
Research Questions:
What are the major trends in Nigerian Pidgin since independence?
How have sociocultural factors influenced these trends?
What strategies can support the standardization of Pidgin?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of language change in Nigerian Pidgin, shedding light on its evolving role in society. The findings will guide language policy and educational practices, ensuring that Nigerian Pidgin remains a vibrant and respected medium of communication (Chinwe, 2023; Balogun, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Nigerian Pidgin since independence; excludes other creole languages.
Definitions of Terms:
Language Change: The evolution of language features over time.
Nigerian Pidgin: An English-based creole widely used in Nigeria.
Standardization: Efforts to establish uniform language norms.
